New Gym Lights, the Church’s Knavish Imbecility, and the Testimony Only We Can Offer | 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus acknowledges the scary things that will lead up to the end of time, but tells us not to be terrified. The things to which we will be subjected before his return will not destroy us, but will lead to our giving testimony. A question for us, therefore, is to what and to whom are we prepared to give testimony? The world has ready access to as much information as it wants about the “knavish imbecility” (Belloc) of the Church, but does it have access to testimony about a living, transformative relationship with Jesus Christ? Are we prone to alarmism, catastrophizing, and being busy-bodies? Or does our way of life betray the effects of a lived encounter and an intentional life of discipleship?
