The Theory of Everything

The Theory of Everything is a study program I developed and presented at Notre Dame Parish in Clarendon Hills, IL in April 2016. After expecting only about 25 people to attend, each week had over 130 participants.

Based on material from the “Anthropology, Creation, Grace, and Eschatology” course at Mundelein Seminary, taught by Rev. Ronald Kunkel, STD, Father Peter John Cameron’s book Why Preach, and several works by C.S. Lewis including Mere ChristianityThe Problem of Pain, and Screwtape Letters, the Theory of Everything seeks to address the fundamental questions of the human heart: Who am I? Why am I here? Where did I come from? Where  am I going? The program is broken into three sessions:

Session One: “In the Beginning…”

  • The Catholic doctrine of creation
  • Reading scripture and studying theology in a Catholic way
  • The Human Person and the implications of man as created in the image of God

Session Two: “The ‘I'”

  • Concerns the elementary experience of the human heart (basic human desires and experiences)
  • “The Fundamental I” and its four main identities: I am…Made, Infinite, Limited, and Expectation
  • Man’s religious sense and the role of religion in the heart of man

Session Three: “Death and Life”

  • The Catholic Doctrine of Original Sin, including the fall of the account in Genesis 3
  • Human limitation and temptation
  • Perspectives of human nature after the fall (Pelagius, the Protestant Reformers, and Catholicism)
  • C.S. Lewis and Redemption in Christ

Praise for the Program

At the end of each session, participants were given a survey to express their thoughts and reactions to the program. Here are the reactions of some actual parishioners:

” A very favorable program; it easily met my expectations.”
“It left us wanting and needing more! The program exceeded my expectations!”
“I loved it!”
“The program is excellent – it brought back concepts long hidden in the back of my mind.”
“This was greater than my expecations!”
“Most enlightening. An excellent program.”
“It is a lot to digest, but I appreciate this opportunity…you have given me to explain my faith and get closer to Jesus. Thank you!”

Presentation: Three sessions, approximately one hour each.
